The rickshaw rider
Since 2013 I am on Berlin's roads as rickshaw rider. Hence I know especially Berlin's historic center quite well. It is a full time job usually from March till November/December. I do not only know the city well but also most of my colleagues - some of them I even call friends. Rickshaw riding is indeed something you need to want, otherwise you won't stay long in this business. I mainly target single travelers, couples and families from in and outside the country whom I show the beauty of my chosen home town but you see me also on large events, weddings and bachelor opartys.
I am a one-man-show but I may pick suitable colleagues for gigs with several vehicles.
Who I am and where I came from
- Born 1964 and raised in Hambiurg - quite between Boomer and GenX; however, GenX sees to fit better.
- No time in the army. They did not want me and I did not want them.
- Studying biology in Würzburg. With a degree: Diploma, yeah!
- PhD in Lübeck, am a real graduate :-)
- in Berlin since 1997
- Worked in the life science field in Berlin.
How and why someone becomes a rickshaw rider?
Rickshaw rider is not the kind of job you are looking for. This one looks you. Science is a highly competitive field, typically with time limited projects one after the other. It is too easy to fall off the tracks, if you do not manage to keep pace at any time and know the right people, especially if you are not too young any more. Both necessity and curiosity lead to start riding, "just for now, lets see".
